Hives update and testing for Vitamin D

Well I may not ever know the exact reason for my huge hive outbreak a couple weeks ago . They are just now calming down. The doctor has prescribed a five day steroid treatment and a stronger skin cream for the itching. Pretty standard treatment from what I have read. She said this should help get the rest of the irritant out of my system. We are going to chalk it up to stress induced at this time.

I have also decided that it would be prudent to wear a mask during the new treatment just to keep from inhaling any particles in the air during it. Although the doctor didn't feel that that was the cause.

I also asked for a Vit D deficiency test since I am hearing from so many people how they have turned up deficient. I asked the Doctor why they are not doing this test automatically . She said they don't usually but almost EVERYONE she tests is deficient . Yes you heard me almost EVERYONE!!! I'm thinking to myself..well why wouldn't this test be standard? But I figured I wasn't going to grill her and she was more than willing to do the test. I reserve my bitching for those I feel deserve it these days....Check the listed reference source for Vitamin D deficiency symptoms. You will be shocked what not getting enough of this Vitamin can do to your system.

My Hive out break could have a link to not having enough of this Vitamin in my system ,and I take 1500 mg a day! I may need much much more than that and you might also. I strongly advise that you all ask your doctor to check your levels . You may be surprised at how much better you can feel when you have the correct amount of it.

  1. a friend of mine Donnie also suggested that I need to make my system more "alkaline" and not so "acidic. He is exactly correct. Ways to do this are to cut down caffine, sugar and flours, and to up the juicing and veggies and fruits! Thanks Donnie!!

  2. Yeah I am still coming up deficient and I take 1500 mg a day. My doctor said to bump it up to over 2,000/day- I'm now taking 2,400- we'll see if that does it.

  3. Just catching up on old posts... I am vitamin D deficient too! My internist had me on 1000 IU/daily, but another doc told me to up it to 2000 IU/daily too. Supposedly it takes a few months for the levels to come up--if I am not at sufficient levels at the 4 month recheck, the doc will prescribe 50000 IU twice a week. This is commonly ordered usually in post-menopausal women as I see at the lab. However, I agree with you Andrea--it should be standard! At the lab, when I started there 2 years ago, Vit D testing used to be done at a reference lab, but since it is being done so frequently now, we acquired the resources to do the tests in house now. This saves us money--and makes us money. I have heard that one of the reasons we are vit D deficient is because of the use of sunscreen--Vit D is synthesized through the sun by our skin. It makes sense--though my derm, who is pretty liberal, still says that you should supplement orally as opposed to not using sunscreen.

Let us know what you find out!
